The Bloomingdale Band Program is celebrating an exceptionally successful school year! Back in December, five of our 8th Grade Band students participated in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra (MSBOA) District 6 Middle School Solo and Ensemble Competition. These students selected a piece of music, practiced it largely outside of the school day, rehearsed with a piano accompanist, and then gave up their Saturday to perform for an adjudicator and receive comments and a rating. Of the five events that performed, four received a Division I rating, and one received a Division II rating—the top two ratings awarded at these events! Similarly, in February, five High School Band students took six events to the MSBOA District 6 High School Solo and Ensemble Competition. Five of the events received a Division I rating, and one received a Division II rating. The students who received a Division I rating at the High School level were then eligible to compete at the MSBOA State Solo and Ensemble Competition in March. Three of the eligible students chose to compete, and each one received a Division I rating! One of our senior Band members performed so well that she was nominated by her adjudicator to be a member of the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Honors Band and to audition as a Michigan Youth Arts Festival Outstanding Soloist. These nominations are given only to the very best high school instrumentalists in the state, and it is a huge honor to be nominated! Our middle and high school musicians consistently perform at the highest level and represent our community well!
Not only have our individual instrumentalists performed well this year, but our bands have performed exceptionally, as well. In early March, both the 7th and 8th Grade Concert Band and the High School Concert Band participated in the MSBOA District 6 Band and Orchestra Festival. At Festival, each band performs three selections for a panel of three adjudicators, who each award the band a rating for its performance. The ensemble is then given a new piece of music that they have never seen before and is given five minutes to study and prepare the selection without playing any instruments. After five minutes, the band must sight read the piece to the best of its ability, and another adjudicator awards the band a fourth rating in the light of an overall musical performance. Both the 7th and 8th Grade Concert Band and the High School Concert Band received three Division I ratings in their concert portions of Festival and a Division II rating in sight reading, and received a Division I rating overall! This is the first time that a Bloomingdale Middle School Band has received a Division I rating since 2013, and the first time that a Bloomingdale High School Band has received a Division I rating since 2008! As a result, both ensembles are eligible to and will be performing at the MSBOA State Band and Orchestra Festival at the end of April. The Bloomingdale Band Program is receiving recognition for its hard work and dedication to high-quality performances and represents our community very well—not only as musicians, but as individuals, too, at all of these events. Congratulations on all of your successes!
The Bloomingdale Band Program wants to say a big “THANK YOU” to the anonymous donor who donated $5000 to help pay off student instrument rentals. Your generous gift is greatly appreciated and will be used to help provide our students with quality instruments. We treasure your support! THANK YOU!
