A Letter from the Principal:
School to Home Reading Opportunity
Pullman Elementary School recently sponsored a school to home reading
opportunity using the One Minute Reader (O.M.R.), published by Read
Naturally Inc., to build reading fluency in a fun, easy to use format.
Dinner was also provided as was child-care services. When using the
program, students read each story several times, following a specific series
of steps designed to make sure they learn to read correctly, read faster,
and understand what they read. These are the principles that make One
Minute Reader so effective:
Read Along: Students read the story aloud while listening to an audio CD of
the story. This teaches them how to pronounce new words and reviews and
reinforces words they already know.
Read Alone: After reading along, students read alone several times. By
practicing the story, they master the story and many of the words in it.
Raise Your Score: Read the story while an adult times you for one minute
and counts the words you don't know. A graph of their growth motivates them
to keep improving
One Minute Reader is an excellent program, designed to encourage wide
reading and rich vocabulary while practicing fluency. Reading without
mistakes is a very important aspect of fluency. Fluency means being able to
read as well as you speak. Nobody speaks perfectly, but most people do speak
accurately. Most people say the words they mean most of the time. Likewise,
readers should correctly say the words most of the time. A good reader
typically would not make more than one to three mistakes for every 100 words
of text. To find out more about O.M.R. or have your Pullman student
